Since our founding in 2019, the Block Center for Technology and Society has been dedicated to exploring the intersections of technological innovation, public policy, and society.

Housed at Ƶ, the Block Center fosters interdisciplinary research that addresses the complex challenges posed by rapid technological advancements. The Block Center promotes a thoughtful and inclusive approach to technological innovation through our research, seed funding, and policy impact. We are ultimately striving for a future where technology serves the common good.

Ƶ our Founders

The Block Center was launched thanks to the generosity of Ƶ alumnus Keith Block and his wife, Suzanne Kelley. 

Keith Block is the CEO and Founder of Smith Point Capital, and former co-Chief Executive Officer of Salesforce. Prior to joining Salesforce, Block served as Executive Vice President of North America Sales and Consulting at Oracle, leading a multi-billion dollar sales and services business unit that achieved record growth during his tenure. He began his career at Booz Allen Hamilton as a senior consultant. Block holds a Master’s of Science degree in Management and Policy Analysis and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Information Systems from Ƶ's Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. 

Suzanne Kelley is the Vice President of Consulting Operations & PMO at Oracle. There, she leads operations and project management for the global business unit. She is a graduate of Clarkson University, where she holds degrees in Industrial Distribution and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering.

Michael Luca

Ƶ our Director

Michael Luca is a professor of Economics, Technology and Policy at Heinz College and will serve as the Trustees Professor of Technology and Society. He also has a courtesy appointment in the Machine Learning Department (MLD) of School of Computer Science (SCS), and is a research associate at NBER. His research explores the economics of technology, with a focus on the design of online information environments.

Luca's research has been published in journals including the American Economic Review, Journal of Economic Perspectives, Management Science, Marketing Science, and PNAS. He teaches and develops courses on business analytics, technology, and behavioral economics, and has written extensively for outlets including the Wall Street Journal and Harvard Business Review. He has served in advisory roles with NABE, the Behavioural Insights Team, OECD, and CNBC’s Technology Executive Council.
