Professional Development
Required Faculty Training to Support Student Well-Being
As part of ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ’s ongoing commitment to student mental health and well-being, all faculty members are expected to complete professional development focused on recognizing and supporting students in distress. Faculty may choose from the three training options listed on the Counseling & Psychological Services website.

Academic Leadership Dialogues
Academic Leadership Dialogues (ALD) is a leadership development program and ongoing administrative initiative managed by the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty. Designed as a leadership opportunity for senior administrators (including deans, associate deans for faculty, and department heads) this year-long program supports academic leaders in their institutional governance roles.
Through recurring monthly meetings, participants from across campus come together to receive university updates, provide input on institutional initiatives and engage in leadership and professional development.
Department heads and associate deans may contact vpfaculty@andrew.cmu.edu for meeting materials or questions, and ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ community members interested in presenting may email a brief topic summary, requested time, and preferred month.
Faculty Forward Professional Development Series
Faculty Forward is a professional development series offered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty for ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ faculty and postdocs. Each session highlights university offices, resources, and support services while exploring timely topics related to teaching, research, service, and other key areas of faculty growth, helping participants build the skills and knowledge to thrive in their academic careers.
Lead Well: Foundations of Academic Leadership
Lead Well is a year-long, cohort-based program supporting new and returning department heads, associate deans and academic leaders as they build the skills needed to lead effectively in today’s higher-education environment. Offered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty in partnership with Academic Impressions, the program focuses on practical leadership tools, peer learning, and strategies for managing complexity, fostering trust, and leading with intention and impact across ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ.
Academic Impressions Membership
ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ offers all faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows and students full access to Academic Impressions, an institution-wide resource for higher-education leadership development. Through targeted training and a proven framework, Academic Impressions supports confident leadership, effective collaboration and career growth at every stage of the academic journey.
NCFDD Membership
ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ’s institutional membership with the NCFDD provides faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students with free access to high-impact professional development.
